The period of youth is a transitional phase, and Scape, a youth-orientated project in Singapore, offers young adults a number of spaces to call their own.

The project, which began life as competition jointly organised by the Singapore Institute of Architects and the Ministry of Community Development in 2006, is being undertaken by RSP Architects and is destined for completion in 2010.

Curved hexagonal slabs will clad the underside of Scape's various structures. This cladding is designed to reflect the activity taking place in the transition spaces out to the area beyond the boundaries of the site.

In accordance with the programmatic requirements of the brief, the 12,266m² site will feature six major spaces conceptualised as Street + Market, the Playground, the Warehouse, the Grid, the Cache and the Studio. A number of evocatively named transitional spaces will also be incorporated, such as Digital Forest, a paved entry point with pockets of greenery and multimedia display panels lining the walls; Art Street, a place for impromptu artistic expression; Green Foyer, a rest and relaxation space dotted with sunflower shaped seats; Magic Box Zone, with weird and wonderful vending machines; and a gallery, free music zone, and study zone. These areas will be open 24/7.

Scape's structure is based on a series of 8m-long hexagonal grids. A six-pronged inclined column construction will support the building at various points. The funnel-shaped columns will be wider at the upper levels, allowing more free space on the ground. Concentrating the column bases also means the structure can be interwoven with the mature trees on site.
