New homes are invariably designed to provide a seamless link with the outdoors. But it's not just wide openings to decks and terraces that make this connection. As this kitchen shows, colour can also be used to bring the outdoors in.

The kitchen, in a contemporary clifftop house designed by Grant McIntyre of Design Construction Home, overlooks the Hauraki Gulf north of Auckland. To enhance the visual link with the ocean, Trinity Interior Design specified an expansive glass splashback and a similar glass panel for the front of the island, both of which are painted in Resene Coastal Blue from the Karen Walker Paints range. This collection features 42 hues from softly weathered shades to dramatic metallics.

Resene paints well suited to kitchens include Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen, an Environmental Choice-approved paint formulated with anti-bacterial silver and MoulDefender to minimise mould growth. This waterborne enamel is tough, durable and washable, and suitable for new and older homes. In critical light areas, its reduced side sheen will minimise surface imperfections.

To make colour selection easier, Resene has published the Resene The Range 2010 and Whites & Neutrals fandecks. These are available at Resene ColorShops, or freephone 0800 Resene (737 363). Website: www.resene.co.nz.
