Big country
This expansive Bluestone-clad house, created by Mitchell Homes, responds to the scale of the open countryside around it
The secret to success for a designer-builder is understanding client needs and following through to the letter. This ability to understand and respond effectively with a high-end product is the stuff that industry awards are made of.
Mitchell Homes is a case in point. The company won the 2008 Gold Master Builders House of the Year in the Karaka regional division in 2008. The master builder specialises in innovative design-and-build homes that frequently attract industry awards, says director Brent Mitchell.
"Whether you are seeking a house and land package, using one of our standard plans, your own plans, or a custom solution drawn up for your site, Mitchell Homes has the experience to make it happen," he says. "This rambling country residence is an example of our ability to provide innovative, practical solutions for our clients."
The owners of the home wanted to partner with builders who would work closely with them to achieve their goal. Set in the lush horse-breeding regions of Karaka, the home's Bluestone exterior cladding ties it to the landscape.
The steep pitch of the shingled roof, with three large, symmetrical arched dormers, dominates the exterior. These are mirrored on the opposite side of the home, overlooking a pond. The house is equally upscale on the inside, with soaring double-height living spaces. A gallery on the upper level overlooks the living areas, adding to the sense of a large, ranch-style residence.
Brent Mitchell says the entire upper level is built within the roof space, with the arched dormers creating a sense of drama when viewed from within the bedrooms. A climate-controlled cellar is a hidden feature, and a built-in computer system is more evidence of the home's user friendliness.
