Just as the design aesthetics of home theatre systems have kept pace with changing trends, so have the functionality and performance of such systems continued to advance.

The new range of Sony Wega televisions, for example, incorporates new Wega Engine picture processing the latest technological development from Sony.

Sony New Zealand puts the ongoing product development down to consumer interest in particular, a growing demand for high-quality flat panel televisions.

Senior product manager Johanna Walsh says Sony is constantly seeking ways to deliver even richer home theatre entertainment experiences. One result is the new Wega Engine technology.

"This technology, which is the latest evolution of picture processing from Sony, has been introduced across our new range of televisions, including the new LCD and Plasma Wega models," she says. "Utilising full digital processing, Wega Engine reduces noise and enhances details to deliver extremely sharp images, great contrast and realism."

Walsh says the Wega Engine also features an intelligent picture enhancement system, fully compatible with analogue and digital broadcasts, DVD, memory stick and other input signals.

The new range of Sony display products also features slim-line designs. This means they are well suited to streamlined, contemporary and minimalist interiors.

"Whether wall-mounted or displayed on the low-rise, central stand, the screens can be enjoyed from almost any angle," says Walsh. "The Super Wide Viewing Angle on the new LCD televisions enables uniform colour reproduction and maximum picture quality for up to 170° in vertical and horizontal directions. A swivel-and-tilt function also ensures eliminates reflections.

As well as LCD televisions, the Sony Wega range of flat-screen televisions includes small- and large-screen sets, projection and plasma televisions. Sony Flat Panel product manager David Clark says these sets are also characterised by sleek design and advanced visual technologies.

Recent additions to the Plasma Wega line-up include the KE50MR1E 50-inch television. As with the 42-inch MR Series Plasma television, this set has an innovative floating glass design that gives the appearance of a screen suspended in mid-air. The MR Series televisions incorporate Sony's media reality technology, a two-piece design that provides high-definition picture quality with discreet cable management to the display.

Senior product manager Sam Duncan says any of these televisions can be combined with Sony audio products to create a personalised home entertainment system.

"Tailoring entertainment systems to meet individual needs has revolutionised the home theatre experience," he says. "With different product packages designed around your home space, lifestyle and budget, you can achieve the best possible solution."

Duncan says customers can make up their own Wega Theatre solutions by choosing any television from the Wega range and combining it with any Sony DVD player/AV receiver and speaker system.

"All of the sound systems are also designed to complement the current trend in contemporary home interiors. Speaker systems today don't need to intrude on your home decor," he says.

Surround sound adds another new dimension to your home theatre experience. Sony's digital Cinema Sound technology has three modes, which will virtually match the acoustics of your room to one of Sony's recording theatres in Hollywood. Depending on the movie, you can select the appropriate mode to even further enhance your experience.

For big-screen entertainment in smaller living spaces, Sony has developed the Cineza home theatre projector. Available in advanced entry-level and mid-range models, it features three-panel LCD technology and quality home-cinema widescreen projection. The Cineza home theatre projector also features SideShot technology that allows the projector to be placed off centre, discretely in the corner of the room. Yet it still projects a perfectly aligned image on screen, says Clark.

"Large-screen entertainment is at the heart of the home theatre experience, and Sony has dedicated much of its technology to ensuring the highest picture reproduction possible," says Clark.

"Sony's range of Cineza projectors has been designed specifically for home theatre. These projectors incorporate high contrast to deliver deep cinema blacks and realistic, life-like images from any video source."
