Even in ancient Rome, the therapeutic value of bathing in a hot tub was recognized. But it has taken many centuries to perfect the art.

The new Maax Collection Roman bathtub featured on these pages combines the latest hydrotherapy technology with a classically inspired design and traditional craftsmanship.

Reminiscent of a 19th-century fireclay tub, the Roman¢ bathtub features an understated vintage design with a softly billowing curved shape. It is available as a drop-in model or a freestanding tub, which meets the current trend for stand-alone designer tubs.

Yvan Lachance, Maax marketing director, says the drop-in model comes with a wide choice of massage settings, including the Hydromax® whirlpool water massage, which targets pressure points for full-body relaxation.

"The Aerofeel® perimeter air injection system is another, more gentle option this is also available in the freestanding tub. Air is forced through tiny openings around the interior wall and backrest of the tub to provide a gently rippling massage that caresses the skin, stimulates the circulatory system and revitalizes the body."

Other innovations for the drop-in model include chromatherapy colored light therapy and the Rest silent whirlpool massage option.

"Hydrotherapy is often associated with noisy water jets, which contradict the very nature of a relaxation massage," Lachance says. "The Rest silent whirlpool massage is 66% quieter than the typical whirlpool pump. This makes it easier to de-stress and renew physical and mental balance. It is much easier for the body to find its proper rhythm in terms of heartbeat and breathing."
