Best foot forward

Sustainability was a key driver for the design of the Westpac on Takutai Square buildings, but it was not at the expense of aesthetics.

To enhance the distinctive colour themes that run through each floor, carpet tiles in a variety of colours were supplied by Interface NZ. Director-owner Steve Aschebrock says three InterfaceFlor products feature in the buildings.

"The base tile, covering 70% of the floor is the Outlook tile in the colour Spectacle. This a dye-batch, mergeable or random product from our I2 Interface Second Generation collection. Inspired by renowned innovation consultant Janine Benyus, the tile reflects the random patterns of nature. The dye batch mergeable design means there is no batch variation, so extra tiles can be added, or tiles replaced with no visual difference to the remainder of the floorplate."

The other grey tiles are Building Blocks in the colour Glass. This is a very light-grey transition tile that leads to the coloured Syncopation carpet tiles. The interior features this tile in multiple colourways, including Spearmint and Canal shown here. Aschebrock says all the tiles are 100% recyclable. "They have been installed using Inter-Tac, a water-based low-VOC adhesive, which is not only environmentally friendly, but also allows for easy lifting if required." Because the carpet tiles are made from solution-dyed nylon, the tiles are highly resistant to UV fading from the harsh sun in New Zealand. All the tiles come with an extensive 15-year warranty.
