On a list of architectural features that convey opulence and grandeur, a majestic sweeping staircase would be near the top. Many a great dramatic movie entrance or exit has been made on one.

The developer of this property wanted to make just such a design statement with a modern take that would emphasise the curve and choice of material used for the treads.

A traditional balustrade would have obscured the detail, so specialist glass products firm Glasshape was commissioned to create a balustrade that would include the requisite safety provisions while enhancing the overall design scheme.

Extensive digital measurements were taken of the curve radius as well as the changing riser heights. CAD drawings were produced from this data, which were then transformed into the finished balustrade using 12mm clear toughened glass and attached using a stainless steel glass vice an architectural fitting in itself.

Glasshape products can be used for bay and feature windows, cabinetry, barrel vault entrances, conservatories and partitioning. At its toughening furnace Australasia's largest Glasshape has the technology to produce certified curved and toughened glass, in sizes of up to 3900mm x 2440mm. Almost any type and thickness of glass can be curved.

Glasshape also supplies a range of specialist intruder-resistant and other high-security laminated glass. Also available is WhisperShield, an acoustic-rated laminate that offers exceptional noise control.
