Bend the rules

The range of materials for houses means we are no longer bound by four straight walls and a door curved glass goes with the flow

Curved windows can add flair to the facade of contemporary dwellings. Bending the glass allows projects to break the mould and use long, swooping lines for distinctive designs.

This waterside house uses fluid shapes to create architectural highlights such as the curved bay window above the master ensuite bathtub. The generous expanse of glass allows the homeowners to enjoy a relaxing soak along with 180º views. The curved window enhances the feeling of spaciousness while letting in plenty of light.

Toughened glass balustrades enable uninterrupted water views from the house. By gently bending the glass, the balustrades follow the shape of the balconies and the infinity pool for continuity of design. As a result of its structural strength, the glass requires minimal framework, making it easy to install and maintain.

Bending glass requires craftsmanship and technology. Staff begin with flat sheets of glass, then apply heat to shape them. Glass specialist Glasshape has developed techniques that allow it to bend most types of glass, which can then be laminated or double glazed.

The company can bend and toughen glass up to 3900mm in height and 2440mm in width with a radius as tight as 450mm to fit almost every curved shape. TemperShield, Glasshape's main product, offers double glazing for thermal resistance and noise reduction. All products are made in New Zealand, reducing lead times and cutting costs.
