Behind the scenes
Starting on the right footing
ADDING TO the internal spaces of a building is complex undertaking, particularly when it involves construction within an existing heritage landmark and working while members of the public continue to visit.
Civil Works constructed piles, ground anchors, capping beams and shockcrete for the new atrium. Because the additions were within the existing structure, Civil Works had to organise for a crane to lift its 27-tonne piling rig over the roof of the museum and lower it into the excavated pit. The proximity to the existing building meant great care had to be taken with drilling and pouring piles, concrete for which was brought in through a specially constructed delivery tunnel.
Once the piles were completed, Smith and Davies excavated a larger access tunnel to allow the continuing safe movement of materials and contractors' vehicles, says Craig Andersen of Civil Works.
"All these constraints meant the various contractors and Hawkins Construction, the main contractor, had to work closely together to ensure the project was finished according to the programme," says Andersen.
