Beating the rush
Lifts in busy high-rise buildings work more efficiently when they are operated by a Compass¢ destination entry system from Otis Elevator Company
The operating efficiency of an elevator is only partly in the speed at which it travels up and down the elevator shaft. A well-designed operating system can improve waiting and travel times as well as reduce the number of stops made on each trip.
Otis Elevator Company won the tender to install destination control, high-level security interfacing and high-efficiency elevator drives into the lifts of the AMP NZ Office Trust-owned State Insurance Building in Wellington.
The specifications were compiled by consulting firm Norman Disney Young, with a focus on the latest of elevator technology combined with achieving the greatest power savings of any elevator system. The system offers a reduction of up to 55% in overall passenger time-to-destination, and 45% power savings compared to traditional systems. Otis had the right products for this project and completed its work on time and in budget.
The Compass destination entry system selected for the project takes information input by passengers to group them by common destinations and minimise the number of stops per trip. Passengers use keypads or touchscreens in the lobby and are directed to the appropriate car for their desired floor.
As well as improving travel speed, this reduces passenger confusion and the rush towards arriving elevators. It also constantly assesses information to accommodate changing patterns through the day.
