Bathroom’s timeless feel consistent with the rest of newly renovated modern interior

The existing main bathroom in this early 1900s villa renovation had been divided into separate rooms – a toilet, a shower room and a bathroom, says professional designer Kira Gray.

“The spaces were dark, dated and disjointed and the owners’ request was simple: design an elegant, sophisticated and warm bathroom.

“They also wanted a timeless feel consistent with the rest of the newly renovated modern interior, plus the bathroom had to function as their main bathroom, off the living, and suit the needs of guests and grandchildren staying.”

Walls were removed, ceilings lowered, and windows altered to merge all three spaces to create one large, cosy bathroom. Warm timber tones were introduced on the cabinetry – tying in with the wider decor – and matched with a Corian benchtop and the exquisite floor and wall tile.

“The latter offers an elegant backdrop for the high-end tapware and fittings from Robertsons.”

A floating vanity with two luxurious basins and plenty of drawer space is the central feature. Plus the backlit mirrored wall cabinets add to this, their subtle curves referencing the basins.

“A cantilevered timber screen was attached and integrated with the vanity. Knitted together by stainless steel rods, this provided a sense of privacy to the toilet, but avoided enclosing the space and minimising light from the window.”

The freestanding bath offers plenty of space around, to make washing grandchildren easier.

“Lastly, the glass-walled, level-entry shower has its own nook with heated towel rails to one side and a timber towel shelving/cupboard unit recessed into a void space on the other side.”
