It's not often you build a kitchen in reverse. But when fashion dictates form, you may find yourself in need of a professional who can work backwards to make sure all the pieces of the puzzle fit into the right place.

The owners of this kitchen sought to retain the original character of their 19th Century farmhouse, but the complexity of the project meant it had to be reverse engineered, says Woodmeister Corporation's John Prifti. This meant working closely with interior designer Wendy Valliere, of Seldom Scene Interiors, to design and lay out the finish details before beginning the construction.

"Because the cabinetry was designed prior to renovations, careful co-ordination between the builder and Woodmeister's engineering staff was also essential. Constant communication ensured the custom cabinetry, windows and doors fitted perfectly at installation time," he says.

Several period scenes on hand-painted ceramic art tiles, by WG Faience, were designed to fit around two large porcelain sinks from Waterworks.

"Special care was taken to design the cabinetry and counters around these scenes, taking into consideration their irregular size and shape, so that only full tiles were used," says Prifti.

Designed to resemble an old farmhouse table, with breadboard rails, the curved island countertop was made out of antique hickory distressed and finished to match the flooring of the house.

All cabinetry was brush-finished with a deep, rich, lipstick-red paint. Two layers of a protective clear coat were added to provide extra durability for the kitchen environment.
