At the water's edge

There is nothing quite like a brand new residence waiting for a homeowner to inhabit it. All those clean, uncluttered walls in sun-filled rooms may seem impossible to maintain, but not if the right products have been used initially.

A key challenge for Barloworld Coatings was to create paint that could be easily touched up should it be damaged, says commercial projects manager Mark Lynch.

"In the wear and tear of everyday life, paint can be scratched or stained. The paint we supplied from both the Taubmans and Bristol brands can be easily touched up without having to repaint an entire wall," he says. "Especially for large internal walls, this ensures that ongoing maintenance is cost-effective."

As each building in the Glebe Harbour development was constructed, Barloworld Coatings worked closely with Australand to provide the right paint.

"All of the paint samples complied with the original specifications, but they needed to be customised for each individual building," says Lynch. "In addition, an external membrane coating was applied to create a flexible coating that allowed for minor structural movement."

The expansive windows and high ceilings that are a feature of Glebe Harbour residences, created a challenge for the treatment of internal surfaces. Lynch says the abundance of natural light meant imperfections in the substrate might be exposed.

"Low-gloss paints were customised to achieve a smooth surface, while also maintaining their washability for future maintenance."
