Artistic focus
Floating ascent
Design creativity needs to be matched by safety and practicality as well as economic considerations in every detail of a commercial project.
When it came to the feature staircase and balustrades in the main lobby of the Queensland Academy for Creative Industries, ADCO Constructions and the project architect, PDT Architects, drew on the expertise of Arden Architectural Staircases.
Consultations at an early stage of the design process allowed Arden to present a revised design for the staircase, says the company's sales and marketing director, Scott Nicholas.
"The basic layout was the same, but the original staircase had been designed differently and would have been substantially more expensive to produce. Our revised concept provided a staircase that appears to float in the space, but that had the advantage of providing significant savings for the project," says Nicholas.
"In a public building like this, crowd loadings are important, so while the staircase may appear to float, it is also engineered to comply with all the various codes and regulations," he says.
With its specialist experience in the design, manufacture, installation and certification of staircases and balustrades, Arden is qualified to offer this type of service to its clients.
