Art Deco influence
The Art Deco styling of this 1920s house is echoed in the kitchen designed by Pauline Stockwell Design
Just as one size doesn't fit all, neither does one design. The best kitchen design is most often one that acknowledges the style of the house, while also catering to the owners' requirements.
For this new kitchen, in a 1920s Art Deco-style Wellington house, designer Pauline Stockwell says she was faced with a considerable challenge.
"The owner loves cooking, so the space needed to include a wide selection of cooking appliances, including a steam oven, electric oven, convection microwave and warming drawer. It also had to incorporate a seating area, laundry and entertainment centre, and include French doors to the courtyard."
Stockwell says the off-white, lacquered cabinetry was designed to complement the Art Deco architecture. It includes an L-shaped island with curved ends, one of which has a metallic finish with stainless steel bands. A similar finish appears on the entertainment centre. Metallic-grey cork floor tiles further enhance the look.
The main work area has a galley lay-out, which provides the most efficient use of the space. A seating area to one side features an imported floral wallpaper, and full-height, mirror-glass sliding doors.
