Apartment makeover

Finding clever design solutions to tricky problems is all in a day's work for a kitchen designer. But there are few more challenging scenarios than renovating an apartment kitchen, where key services are in fixed positions.

For the Auckland apartment featured here, designer Judith Marks of Fyfe Kitchens was able to incorporate space formerly occupied by the dining room. This enabled a casual dining area to be created, which opens directly to a sheltered balcony and extensive harbour views.

Fyfe accommodated existing servicesby ensuring plumbing fixtures were placed on side walls.

To provide the clean, modern look required by the clients, the sleek cabinetry has a satin lacquered finish. Aluminium frames the lift-up doors in the glass upper cabinets, and the toughened, painted-glass panel doors of the tall crockery cabinets.

The island has a Quarella benchtop, and satin lacquered panels similar to the cabinetry. The island is framed with stainless steel, enhancing the contemporary feel. Two pull-out pantries help retain the kitchen's crisp, uncluttered look.
