Starting out with a new home concept offers a good opportunity to take a few design risks, and perhaps consider something that's rather more interesting than the run-of-the-mill.

NSD Homes specialises in designing and building homes that are exactly this. All homes made by this family-operated company are architecturally designed so they have their own individual style and personality.

Director Paul Damjanovic says the company always strives to achieve something different and refreshing with its designs.

"We want all of our homes to have a smart appearance and to make good use of space. We also place importance on our quality finishes," he says.

Featured on these pages is the Rembrandt, a spacious 44-square, two-level resort-style home. To create the contemporary style visualised by NSD Homes, most exterior walls of the house are rendered, with split-face rock and brick elements adding variety and texture. A flat roof and angled walls add to its individual look.

The exterior angles also add interest to the interior of the house, which features large open-plan living spaces that flow out onto courtyards and gardens.

To ensure the living areas are flooded with natural light, ceilings are 3m high and windows all extend from the floor to the ceiling. Bifold doors create a seamless connection between the main living area and a private courtyard, and between a media room and another courtyard on the other side of the house.

Other unusual design elements that help make the Rembrandt stand out from the crowd include backlit wall niches and water features throughout, and a split-level living room and study, which are separated by a divider. A floating staircase that combines Victorian ash treads with glass balustrading rises dramatically up from the entry foyer.

In the kitchen, which is part of the main living space, reconstituted stone benchtops are teamed with high-gloss cabinetry. To add interest to the space, some of the high-level wall and island cabinets are made from dark-stained wenge. Stainless steel appliances contribute to the contemporary appearance.

Upstairs are three bedrooms, all of which are large and designed to accommodate double beds, with space to spare. They are all fitted with generous wardrobes. A fourth bedroom and separate bathroom are downstairs.

The master suite also includes a walk-through wardrobe, a large bathroom containing a spa bath that fills from a ceiling-mounted outlet, and a separate 1.5m x 2m shower with a frameless screen. In keeping with the overall quality, the bathrooms are fitted with tapware from companies such as Kohler, Englefield and Zucchetti.

NSD Homes has 13 different display homes, open for viewing at four locations in Victoria.
