Ancient treasure
Timber tops that resonate with a distinctive individual look are available from Kings Fourth Generation Woodworking Co
Two thousand years ago, an entire forest was buried in the volcanic eruption that created Lake Taupo. The totara trees felled by this spectacular natural event lay under ash and river-born gravel. There, they acquired a rich grain that today rivals African wenge for depth of colour.
Generation 4 timber tops, such as those made from black totara, are providing designers with the inspiration to create rich, individual interiors, says managing director Peter King.
The 2004 Generation 4 timber bench top competition recognised this skill by awarding Mal Corboy of Intrigue Kitchen Design.
"The winning countertop design used black totara to complement the tone of the cabinetry and to help achieve a bold, contemporary kitchen. The other design pictured, made from rewarewa, shows the ability of the designers at Intrigue Kitchens to produce crafted pieces," says King.
