The understated quality of minimalism is a look that works well in European kitchens, where the spare lines and smooth surfaces successfully complement old-world architecture. But can the look be translated to our modern American homes, where cool can so easily become cold?

Howard Lund of Metric Home believes it can. The company has introduced a range of cabinetry from German manufacturer Eggersmann that addresses just these concerns.

"Too many minimalist designs can look cold and unwelcoming in our American settings. One solution is the use of oiled, finished wood instead of a high-gloss lacquer, to soften and warm the aesthetic."

The wood shown here, American walnut, comes from sustainable and certified plantations. The fronts of the cabinetry are constructed using three layers of walnut, for a stable front that will not warp or crack. Oil is used to seal the wood, which creates an understated matte finish.

"This is a sensual, tactile and approachable surface that softens the clean and simple design," says Lund.

The cabinetry can be specified in 29 different veneers, including fabricated veneers to emulate the look of exotic woods such as zebrano and ebony. The cabinetry can be paired with any countertop material, including wood, stone and glass. Each piece of cabinetry is custom made to meet project specifications.
