Older homes are often defined by their sense of solidity and permanence. But it's a look that can also be introduced to contemporary interiors.

This family kitchen in a new house was designed to provide a clean-lined modern feel, but surfaces were specified to ensure it would still be warm and comfortable and well suited to entertaining.

Designer Suyin, CKDNZ, of Design Studio paired chunky CaesarStone® benchtops in Snow with an equally solid, dark-stained oak bar top.

"CaesarStone in Snow is one of the whitest engineered stones available, which was a key reason for its selection," Suyin says. "It provides the clean, crisp look that was required and is a good match with the white-lacquered cabinets. CaesarStone also provides plenty of other benefits in terms of its durability and ease of maintenance it is made from 94% natural quartz aggregates, which makes it extremely strong."

Other featured materials include a textural glass-tiled backsplash, and Laminex Licorice Linea overhead cabinets. Licorice Linea, from The Laminex Group, is a low-pressure laminate from the company's woodgrain collection.

"The dark cabinets and the pattern of the grain add warmth and richness to the kitchen, which makes it a very welcoming space for guests and family," says Suyin.

To provide plenty of light to the cooking area, narrow horizontal windows were positioned directly below the overhead cabinets.
