A wall runs through it

An introduced feature timber wall reorganises this apartment – other walls were removed, secret doors appear in unusual places and the now open-plan living zone is ideal for both living alone and socialising – sculptural furniture and artworks complete the picture

Renovation by FC Studio

From the designer:

This renovation, in São Paulo city, Brazil, was ordered by a businesswoman who had just bought the property from a family.

Therefore, we were asked to rethink the apartment in terms of the new owner's different needs and lifestyle.

We removed walls and integrated the spaces to suit the owner's daily activities – essentially,  the spaces were redeveloped once we understood the particularities of her personality and her way of living.

Prior to the work, a television room had been separated from the living room, the kitchen was closed off and the social area had been small.

Our project increased the social area by eliminating strategic walls, integrated the social area with the kitchen and also transformed two bedrooms into one large bedroom – more in line with the new owner's needs.

We introduced a large woodwork panel which expands the space horizontally and the apartment is organised around this single design gesture, including the greatly enhanced social space.

Opposite this feature panel, there is the shelf for the television, its vibrant red colour element forming part of the composition.

The lighting reaffirms the design intentions, designed in concert with the woodwork and layout.

In addition to the architecture, we designed two pieces for this space: the Ensemble table and the Brasília coffee table.

Both take into consideration the proportion and materiality of the interior palette, being in marble, wood and Corten steel.

The types of wood and marble seen here are commonly used in Brazil.

In terms of design, the furniture pieces created allude to the national sensibility.

The Brasília coffee table, for example, is inspired by the urban morphology of the capital, while the Ensemble table is a reference to the rural fields that are a common sight in our country.
