The success of any kitchen renovation project comes down to how the design fulfils the client's brief. Of paramount importance are the requirements of functionality including creativity and space design and aesthetics, says Smeg product and promotions co-ordinator Tony Lee."Contemporary design is much more about creating fluid, rather than segregated, spaces. As our attitude towards food has evolved to where we regard it more as a pleasure than a necessity, so too have our notions of kitchen design changed. A much more theatrical element has emerged, which requires the tools of the trade to step up to the mark as well."For the kitchen featured on these pages, the design brief was simple: form and function, says designer John Crooks. A view of a kitchen with some Omega Smeg appliances in it. "The end result is a classic form-and-function design project that reflects the clients' criteria for a functional, centrepiece kitchen. Functionality is achieved without compromising aesthetics, or the clients' lifestyle and tastes. Simply put, the kitchen is a blend of restraint and contemporary flair."Form is created by integrating timber flooring, white satin vinyl joinery, composite stone benchtops and stainless steel appliances. Functionality is attained by strategic use of drawers, roll-out shelves and slide-out base storage units."The final result is due to the use of bold CaesarStone benchtops with waterfall returns and stainless steel handles, while the functionality has been enhanced by the deliberate disregard for traditional storage solutions, such as corner cabinetry," says Crooks. Another of the kitchen's innovative utilisation of space is the incorporation of slide-out units concealed in the kickboard. For more information, contact Omega Smeg, 2 Baker St, Botany, NSW 2019, phone (02) 9384 5678, fax (02) 9666 3025, or visit the website: www.omegasmeg.com.au.
