Within a large apartment development, care with space planning is critical to ensure that all the units have good access to natural light and views, without compromising their individual privacy.

Spacious interiors that flow onto balconies are among the features that ensure the White Heron Apartments are light-filled and make the most of the panoramic views.

Architect Colin Leuschke of Leuschke Group says the complex was designed with generously sized apartments to suit the premium location.

"The site offers views in several directions, so we aimed to provide an attractive outlook from every apartment. Because of the shape of the site we were able to achieve this and safeguard the privacy of individual residents at the same time," says Leuschke.

Stewart Harris of Martin Hughes Interior Architects worked on the layout and interior design of the apartment featured on these pages.

Minimal circulation spaces and an open-plan layout allow natural light from windows and sliding doors on the front wall to penetrate deep into the interior of the apartment. With this design, the light and views can be enjoyed even from the kitchen at the rear of the main living room.

Lesser-used rooms, such as the bedrooms and bathrooms, are located on the south-facing back wall of the apartment.

"We selected a scheme to run throughout the interior of the apartment," he says.

"Classic stone tiles are used for the floors, and for benchtops in the kitchen and bathroom. Walls are painted in neutrals greys, creams and beiges," says Harris.

"This scheme provides an understated background that doesn't dominate the view, and allows the new owners to individualise the apartment by adding their choice of colours, finishes and artworks."
