TIDA NZ 2017 – Architect-designed suite winner – Mark Frazerhurst Architects

The TIDA New Zealand 2017 Architect-designed suite winner

From architect Mark Frazerhurst: Ensuite & bedroom design for a new one bedroom house. The house is a project the Architect has designed and built for his parents. The underlying brief for the bedroom from the Client was an intent for ‘romantic contemporary with an architectural edge’.The house is named ‘folding house’ due to its overall external & internal forms, and underlying concept. Elements within the ensuite needed to reflect the folding house concept, as well as material and colour selections.A private external ensuite landscaped garden is incorporated into, and is a focal point of the ensuite design, with the free-standing bath perched on the edge of the internal-external threshold. Connections to the external ensuite garden, both physical and visual, are through sliding glazed aluminium doors.A modest budget, as well as an intent to ‘hand craft’ as much of the construction as possible, has directed decisions on design and selections of materials and finishes.Builders constructed the house to an enclosed shell. Due to budget constraints, the Architect took over the construction of the house internally, and built and installed many of the hand crafted elements e.g. the bespoke mirror, integrated door, bedside tables and battened plywood wall. The colour palette is monochromatic, with timber grain highlights. The use of birch ply panels and battening reflects a warmth and tactility, as well as being a material able to be worked and finished by hand.
