Commanding perspective major remodel by Don Nelson

The potential of a property in need of major remodelling isn't always obvious at first glance. But it's often these seemingly difficult projects that result in the most dramatic transformations.

This country property, on a waterfront site south of Auckland, is a good example. Don Nelson of Don Nelson Architecture says the original house, built in the 1970s, was large but uninspiring.

"The owners wanted to add onto the house, which had a steeply pitched roof. Establishing the right balance between this roof and the flat-roofed addition was challenging, but ultimately successful," Nelson says. "The solution was to dress up the entire facade, wrapping new curved elements right around the house, and pulling them out to accommodate a large extension."

The distinctive, flowing curves, which are a signature of the firm's work, also feature on a first-floor addition.

"We take our cue from the natural world there are no straight lines in nature," says Nelson.

Other changes to the exterior include an expansive new north-facing terrace with a covered alfresco dining area. This features adjustable overhead louvres that allow sunlight to penetrate in winter.

"The existing pool was in the right position, but we created an infinity edge to give it a more contemporary look," says Nelson. "We also introduced screens to protect the outdoor living area from the prevailing southwesterly winds."

On the interior, the transformation is equally impressive. The addition houses the family living areas, with the kitchen right at the centre of operations.

"One of the owners loves to cook and is involved in the catering business. She wanted the kitchen to be the focal point, and she wanted to enjoy the view of the pool and the water while she worked.

"We contracted Sydney designer Lance Dixon to design the kitchen, which follows the curve of the house. It features two islands and highly polished rosewood cabinetry reminiscent of a super yacht. To bring natural light into the far side of the room, we added a row of curved skylights. A glazed wrought iron screen is open to the media room on the other side."

Other key features of the renovation include an extra-large master suite with a balcony on the new upper level.
