Dark and light surfaces and Smeg stainless steel appliances give this kitchen a smart, modern look
Renovating an old house can be an ongoing exercise involving many different stages, so it's important to ensure that each part of the job is only done once.
To ensure all work is forward progress, Annalise Ryan, the owner of the villa featured on these pages, has a master plan for her renovations, which she aims to implement over time. A new kitchen was close to the top of the list.
"I decided to relocate the kitchen to another part of the room to improve the flow between living and dining areas," she says.
To give the kitchen a dramatic appearance, Ryan chose a dark oak and light grey colour scheme with stainless steel appliances and accessories. Wenge cabinetry contrasts with grey walls, a white Corian benchtop and Smeg appliances.
"I have always liked the appearance of Smeg appliances; they are simple and easy to use, and helped create the modern style I wanted," she says.
The 60cm double wall oven is built into cabinets on the rear wall. With the two ovens featuring a total of 12 functions and stay-clean liners, they are both convenient and practical to use. A 90cm five-burner gas cooktop, with stainless steel flush bases and controls and cast iron pan stands, is flush-mounted into the benchtop. For a clean-lined look, a Power Pack rangehood is built into the cabinetry above the cooktop. This model offers two halogen lights, a four-speed fan and an efficient extraction rate of 750m³ per hour.
To maintain the look, an integrated dishwasher is located under the island, close to the sink. This machine has four wash programmes and capacity for 12 place settings.
On the side wall of the kitchen, glass sliding doors conceal a microwave and other appliances.
