White, bright and fresh

Often, a simple kitchen design is the most effective way to create a feeling of space and light through living areas.

Martin Wiltshire, managing director of David Reid Homes, says clean lines and simplicity characterise the design of the company's new show home in Orewa.

"Consequently, we wanted the interior to reflect the same approach. The living areas are all open plan, so we designed the kitchen to have a presence in the space, but without dominating it," he says.

White cabinetry, back-painted white glass splashbacks and white Stonex benchtops are co-ordinated with stainless steel appliances from Smeg. This combination ensures the kitchen, which looks out onto a courtyard, is light in tone and looks spacious and uncluttered.

Wiltshire says the appliances were chosen to complement the theme.

"The ceramic cooktop is flush-mounted into the benchtop and the rangehood above it is concealed within the upper cabinetry," he says.

The 77cm ceramic cooktop with stainless steel trim has four elements. These four extra-high speed zones include one oval and one double zone. Touch controls ensure the cooktop is simple to operate, and individual residual heat indicators are a safety feature showing whether elements are switched on or off.

A Smeg side-by-side, 546-litre, stainless steel refrigerator/freezer fits neatly into the rear wall of the kitchen. This model incorporates an electronic ice and water dispenser with a water filter and light.

Flanking the opposite end of the kitchen is a Smeg 60cm stainless steel double wall oven, offering eight functions in the main oven and four in the auxiliary. Stay-clean liners in both ovens make them easy to maintain. Above the ovens is a Smeg microwave in a matching trim kit.

The contemporary, stainless steel finish of the appliances is complemented by recessed drawer handles and two under-mounted sinks in the island.
