What really matters is rarely seen

One of the underlying considerations during the design and construction of Kimi Ora School was to achieve a Green Star-rated building and thermal insulation is a key factor.

The lobby of Kimi Ora School has the capacity to act as a wind tunnel, requiring a specialised door solution, says George Taylor, director of George Taylor Limited.

"To provide enhanced thermal and sound insulation, the outer door set comprises toughened glass panels within a double glazing profile (LR.22) by Tormax of Switzerland. The LR.22 system incorporates an overlapping weather seal system for draught elimination.

"The inner door set is also made from toughened glass, which provides increased rigidity. These single glazed door panels and side lights are fitted with the Tormax LR.12 profiles, which are only 20mm square. Since the glass is providing the structural strength, the LR.12 is used to protect the door edges from impact damage, to carry air seals to protect the internal environment, and of particular importance to this project, to define the door edge for the sight impaired."
