Flooring leads the interiors on this residence

Building your dream home in a spectacular setting is really only half the job done. Besides orienting the indoor-outdoor spaces and windows to the views, it also makes sense to connect the interiors with the outlook. Part of this is making sure flooring and finishes are at one with the setting, so the eye runs easily between them.

The design of this house in Cromwell, Central Otago, was driven by the owners, the McPhees. The exterior echoes the setting with schist elements and natural timber, and most rooms take in the landscape.

Greg Booth, one of Otago's leading interior designers and founder of Otago Design, which operates out of Carpet Court, had the job of marrying the interiors to the land.

"Having spent a lot of time in the area myself, I have an understanding of its natural beauty," says Booth. "I'm also well aware of its temperature extremes and long summers choosing products that are robust enough to cope with these conditions was crucial.

"I chose Giovanni Italian tiles in the Basaltina Stone Project range and Lappata colour for the indoor-outdoor areas, kitchen and bathrooms. This tile was selected because it tones in with the schist-covered mountains and the cladding seen through the windows and for its Mica finish, which sparkles in the sun.

"In addition, the Basaltina Stone Project tile combines the natural look of stone with the durability of porcelain."

Booth selected chic feature wallpapers to add drama to the spaces, while ceilings are painted in Dulux Sandfly Point to avoid glare. Painted walls are in Dulux Wharekauhau, offering a restful counterpoint to the colourful outlooks.

"However, it was really the flooring that underpinned the interior design particularly the carpet. In the living areas and bedrooms, SmartStrand® Ingenious Flair in Slate Tile was specified to tone with the warm hues of the local stone.

"This versatile carpet was also chosen for its incredible durability, and colourfastness key pluses for Central Otago's indoor-outdoor lifestyle."

The interior designer says he favours SmartStrand for its wide array of colours, patterns and textures, which makes it easy to create an individual look and style for his clients.

Booth worked closely with the McPhees to achieve the desired effect. All the elements the feature wallpapers, plush drapes, durable tiling and soft-yet-strong carpets combine to create an enduring appeal.
