Urban legend
Technological breakthroughs have made asphalt roofing tiles a practical roofing solution
Just as a floor receives a lot of wear and tear, the roof of a house is an area that comes in for a battering from the elementsyet typically receives little day-to-day maintenance. But keeping a roof looking new doesn't have to involve a regular application of elbow grease not if you make the right initial choice of materials.
Mike McNie, of Asphalt Shingle Roofing NZ, says that while the aesthetics of Pabco roofing products have always been popular, technological breakthroughs by 3M have made many Pabco shingles impervious to the spread of roof algae, because of Scotchgard¢.
"Algae spores are carried by the wind, so your roof can get algae from the house next door," he says. "Many Pabco shinglesuse the new Scotchgard Algae Resistant System, which keeps the spores from lodging in the shingles. The shingles are guaranteed for between 30 and 50 years."
