Instead of coming home to a cold, empty house after a hard day's work, wouldn't it be nice to arrive home to a well-lit, warm and welcoming environment, activated en route from your mobile phone?

If you like the sound of that scenario, says Gary Larkin, national sales manager for Clipsal, then you should know that there are few limits to the benefits of smart housing.

"Clipsal's home automation system, called C-Bus, lets you activate pre-programmed scenes for your home. With the push of a button you can control a combination of lights, entertainment, security and other functions," he says.

The many benefits of a smart housing system include enhanced safety and security, says Larkin.

"If you hear a strange sound at night, one touch can turn on all the lights. Setting a scene to holiday mode means that lights, curtains, TVs or even garden sprinklers create the illusion that people are home," he says.

A night scene could arm the security system, ensure selected lights are off, and dim others for nightlighting in children's rooms, says Larkin.

"In terms of a home entertaining mode, imagine dimming the lights, closing the curtains and starting the show all with the push of a button."

Clipsal smart home systems can be operated from anywhere via telephone or internet. Inside, smart switches or remote controls are used.

"Gone are the days when a switch had to be a boring white rectangle fixed by a screw top and bottom," says Larkin.

Clipsal offers a range of fully programmable smart switches. These include Saturn, with a distinctively crafted glass face, and the architecturally designed Neo, available in nine colours. These are now available with Dynamic Labelling Text which allows users to electronically label switches according to their requirements.
