Watch the videoAbout the project: The client brief for this major renovation of a typical late 1950s weatherboard bungalow required the designer to stay within the existing 119sq m footprint.

While the original house had good bones, the layout of the rooms was disjointed, with little regard for the sun or flow to outdoor living.

Higham Architecture removed a number of existing internal walls to create a more open plan living space, but it was the relocation of the kitchen that was key to the success of the project.

The TIDA judges also noted the emphasis on being environmentally and ethically responsible in the selection of products and materials – applying the principles of Reduce, Re-use, Recycle and Upcycle.
