Maximising the extensive city and harbour views was a priority for the designers of the Heards building. To ensure the penthouses would have an unobstructed outlook, Nebulite Auckland custom designed large sliding doors that slide across the exterior walls, rather than across fixed windows.

Nebulite project manager Darren Craig says the openings are particularly large up to 6.2m wide with several of the sliding doors measuring 2.4m.

"The design provides for the largest possible openings, with the least amount of aluminium," Craig says. "Similarly, the apartments on the fourth level have commercial bifolds, with 1m-wide panels that provide maximum glazing and minimal aluminium."

Craig says the powdercoated aluminium joinery in the apartments is from the Nebulite 39mm Suite, which is usually specified for high-end residential and light commercial projects. The colour used throughout the building is Metropolis Electric Cow.

The boutique offices in the building feature joinery from Nebulite's Export Suite. The absence of mullions and the use of concealed fixing give the glazing a seamless, contemporary look.

Craig says Nebulite custom designed and manufactured all the joinery for the building, but the development of the sliding door system for the penthouses was the most challenging aspect of the project.
