Taste of history
The design for this home is based on an iconic 100-year-old home of American architect Frank Lloyd Wright
It's easy enough to admire a particular or especially well-known style of architecture, but far more complex to reinterpret it when designing a new home of your own.
The owners of the home featured on these pages had always admired the designs of American architect Frank Lloyd Wright. When they decided to build a new home close to the beach, this enthusiasm formed the basis of their brief to architect John D'Anvers.
The home incorporates many of the most recognisable features of Frank Lloyd Wright's designs a large cantilevered roof, oversized chimneys, strong horizontal lines, a varied palette of timbers, and large open-plan internal spaces.
The whole project was pulled together by Santa Barbara Homes, a group of project managers that specialises in helping clients undertake luxury home-building projects. Managing Director Richard Vincent says his company's role is to look after clients, assisting with every stage of the process, from the initial concept to final landscaping.
"We act in the client's interests, employing contractors and subcontractors, so we deal directly with any problems that may arise," he says.
Because of its buying power, Santa Barbara Homes offers substantial savings on materials, and can provide accurate costings at the outset of a project. Efficient, regular reporting allows clients to see exactly what they are spending. In addition, regular on-site meetings ensure clients are kept up to date with progress, and are aware in advance of decisions that need to be made.
"Our extensive knowledge of local and imported products is passed on, so clients are exposed to the latest materials and finishes," says Vincent.
