Good design doesn't have to be predictable. Sometimes it's the unexpected use of colors and materials that makes the biggest impact.

This remodeled kitchen, designed by Hans Schuon, CKD, of Schuon Kitchens & Baths Inc, features a bold palette designed to create a distinctive, contemporary feel.

Birds-eye maple cabinetry is punctuated with bright, lacquered doors, drawers and panels in red and blue, with accents of stainless steel. To add further textural and visual interest, the countertops on the perimeter cabinets and peninsula feature Corian® Aubergine from the Corian® Private Collection.

"Corian Aubergine has the look of a particulate substrate, not unlike granite," says Schuon. "It has some very light, almost white, veining that enhances the muted, gray-brown background."

For this project, one of the countertops incorporates draining grooves. The fact that Corian can be sculpted in this way provides additional benefits, says Schuon.

"I particularly like the coved backsplashes that are possible with this material," he says. "The Corian® seamless look is another benefit. If there is a need for seams, they are inconspicuous."

The designer says other advantages include Corian's low maintenance.

"It is very easy to care for. It won't stain easily, and it's renewable scratches or knife cuts can be simply sanded away to leave the countertops like new."

Like all Corian products, the Private Collection surfacing materials are non-porous, so they won't promote the growth of mold, mildew or bacteria.

Other products in the Private Collection include surfaces that take their color and movement from natural materials, including volcanic rock.
