Regular sales briefings are an important part of the bank's business, and depend on reliable, user-friendly equipment, says Andrew Calov of Spaceage Communications, the company that sourced and installed all the audiovisual equipment for the project.

The company drew on its experience of managing the bank's audiovisual systems in its old premises to win the contract for the fit-out. Bovis Lend Lease audiovisual consultant Hugh Sheil provided advice throughout the project on behalf of the client.

"Like most merchant banks, the company relies heavily on video conferencing it is an integral part of their business," says Calov. "We installed touch screens and high-definition video conferencing facilities, which brings the system close to broadcast-TV quality. In fact, UBS is one of the first companies in Australia to use these high definition facilities."

Around 30 screens were installed on the trading floor, the largest of its kind in Australia, allowing traders to monitor news from broadcasters, as well as view the morning's briefings. Screens were also installed in meeting rooms, lecture theatres and main reception.

"A large part of the project was bringing together various elements within the meeting spaces, such as blinds, air conditioning, lights and of course the audiovisual systems, and ensuring that all the components were seamlessly integrated," he says. "We also trained UBS staff to use the AV equipment, although our input was fairly minimal as the system is so intuitive."

Another, more unusual, request was for a system that could shut window blinds at certain times of the day and year, when the sun could otherwise damage the bank's extensive collection of Australian artwork.
