Much of the access flooring was reused
One of the key principles of sustainable design to retain and reuse materials already on site was demonstrated by the flooring element of this fit-out.
Tasman Access Floors supplied the original access floor systems to Chifley Tower back in 1991, says Walter Brown, Tasman's business unit manager.
"It made financial and environmental sense to reuse the product, which has a life cycle of 25 years. The existing floors were still in good condition 15 years after initial installation, so these were retained and reused wherever possible," he says.
Where new access flooring was needed, the company installed its new Tasman Tascor® TC750U system to make up a shortfall in the general office floor systems. The Tasman Tascor® TC1000SXH computer flooring system, with an integrated finish of anti-static laminated tile, was installed in the main data centre on level two to provide easy and rapid access to data cables. The old data room floor panels were then re-used in the smaller data rooms in each floor. In the main dealing area, the access floor incorporates an underfloor air plenum to supplement the air conditioning system.
"Underfloor air distribution is becoming increasingly common as it reduces energy consumption. Air at the right temperature is directed to the person, rather than being directed from ceiling height," he says.
