When buying lounge furniture it is easy to sacrifice comfort in the search for smart, contemporary pieces. Yet in an age where stress-related back and neck pain is a common complaint, choosing a chair that supports your body correctly is ever more important.

Stressless reclining sofas and chairs are designed to move with your body, totally supporting it, for greater relaxation. Designed and manufactured in Norway, the extensive range includes a variety of both reclining and fixed-back seating.

Scansin International distribute Stressless products in Australia through a network of furniture retailers.

Marketing manager Karl Fiskerstrand says the chairs are the only recliners endorsed by the American Chiropractic Association.

"The patented Plus system automatically ensures the correct degree of support for your head and lower back, no matter what position the chair is in," he says.

Many of the chairs have height-adjustable headrests, meaning they can be used comfortably by more than one person.

Stressless customers can choose the size of the chair that suits them.

"A reclining chair must be suitable for the user's body one size does not fit all. So we offer two or three sizes in each design. They have slightly different heights, seat depths and widths," says Fiskerstrand.

The reclining sofas allow two people to sit together, yet relax in completely different positions. The glide function, incorporated in all Stressless reclining chairs and sofas, automatically follows the subconscious movements of each user.

These reclining sofas are particularly suitable for a home theatre room. The gliding support mechanism allows the viewer to be comfortable right to the end of a film.

Each piece is built with double supports for stability, and a lumbar section that adjusts to support the lower back, no matter how far the seat back is reclined. The circular wooden base allows the recliners to revolve 360° in either direction.

There are four types of leather to choose from in a wide array of colours, and seven different wood finishes. Optional matching footstools and ottomans are also available.

Stressless furniture is manufactured by Ekornes, in the company's 59,000m² factory in the village of Ikornnes, in the west of Norway. This is just one of the company's four Norwegian factories.
