All kitchen cabinetry needs to include a number of essential features like base units, door fronts, shelves and drawers, but the way in which these elements are configured and connected can create a variety of designs.

Renowned Spanish furniture and lighting designer Jorge Pensi has taken a fresh look at how the kitchen is furnished and has created Plusmodo, a completely new design scheme.

Plusmodo, designed for Poggenpohl, is based on revealing and concealing the various elements within the space.

With Plusmodo kitchens, hinged doors are eliminated. Instead, the cabinet fronts slide open to reveal shelving, while the base units contain deep drawers.

Both open and closed elements create interesting focal points in Pensi's design. Pull-out trays sit on top of the drawers, below the thick countertop. These trays can have glass sides making the objects within look as though they are sealed in a glass display case when the tray is pushed closed.

For trouble-free opening and closing, the trays slide along hidden guide rails and are equipped with Poggenpohl's +Motion easy-closing mechanism.

Lighting elements are another critical feature of Plusmodo. Satin glass shelves within the wall units allow light to travel both upwards and downwards, making glass and china gleam. In addition, lights are set into an aluminum bar above the cooking area. This shelf serves as a convenient spot for condiments and a place to hang utensils.

The Plusmodo design is available in a variety of materials and finishes. One option features lacquered sliding doors made from thick aluminum honeycomb and finished with elm fronts.

Traditional gray lacquered fronts are a popular choice, and Plusmodo is also available in mineral white and aqua blue. Countertops can be made from granite or laminate.

Bernice Hagen of Poggenpohl Kitchens in San Francisco says that the Plusmodo kitchen combines a sleek, contemporary design with the latest developments in kitchen functionality and ergonomics.
