Advances in technology can remove many uncertainties from the design process for both the client and the contractors.

From the early stages of the project, Auckland Steel worked with Multiplex and other engineering consultants to design the structural steel for the northern precinct and the large outdoor cone sculpture. It then fabricated and erected the structural steel sections.

The company utilises StruCad 3D Draughting software and StruMis Fabrication Management software on every project it undertakes. Director Tim Watkins says this software streamlines the design and build process, and ultimately allows a 3D model to be produced.

"The model makes it much easier for the client to visualise the finished result, and it allows everyone involved to check that the proposed building integrates correctly with other sections of the structure," he says.

"One of the strengths of our company is the capacity of the workshop to fabricate large volumes of steel. We also have a strong detailing team and the advantage of this was seen in the creation of the cone. Our team reworked and redesigned this structure to produce a practical solution. As a result of this process, we made considerable cost savings for the client in the construction of the cone."
