Diverting the council's storm water mains was one of the biggest tasks for Christopher Contracting, the company responsible for the full design and construction of hydraulic services, sewer water and storm water drainage at Harbourside Wharf.

"The fact that the development was so close to Brisbane River presented us with some challenges," says company director Geoff Christopher. "It was a large and diverse project and diverting the council's storm water mains to allow construction of the new buildings was the most challenging aspect of the project for us."

The storm water mains were two metres below the Brisbane River, which meant that the company had to work around the tides.

"We had to pre-cast the head walls off site and then sheet pile into the river. The sheet piling was then dewatered, to allow the pre-cast elements to be fitted.

"Although the project gave us these sorts of logistical problems, it demonstrated our ability to apply innovative and effective methods to difficult projects. Our design methodology also allowed us to make cost savings on the project."

During its 18 months on the project, the company also supplied and fitted bathware for the project. The bathware, which included waterless urinals, tapware and sanitaryware, received a five-star rating under the national WELS scheme for its water-saving credentials.
