Cruise ships of up to 80,000 tonnes and 230 metres in length are now capable of berthing at the new Portside Wharf's cruise ship terminal, following major works by maritime construction company Waterway Constructions.

"We were responsible for both design and construction of the new facility, and devised an innovative solution that combined new work with retained elements of the existing wharf," says Waterway Constructions' director Mal Hiley.

A total of 1500m² of new wharf deck was constructed on steel tube piles up to 42m long. The concrete deck used pre-cast headstocks and slabs, together with an in situ topping slab. The work also included the construction of five berthing dolphins integrated into the wharf structure and three mooring dolphins using pre-cast concrete shells together with in situ concrete placement.

Waterway Constructions also dredged 40,000m³ of sediment from the berthing basin to ensure the new cruise ships could be accommodated.

"The Portside cruise terminal project is a clear demonstration of Waterway Constructions' ability to design and construct innovative and cost-effective solutions for maritime works," says Hiley.
