There's a school of thought that says a new kitchen in a traditional bungalow is best served by having a visual connection to the home's original architecture.

For this project, RH Cabinetmakers worked from the architect's plan to provide that link through the framed panel cabinetry, jarrah floors and toekicks, and ceiling treatment. But the kitchen also introduces more contemporary elements that are in keeping with a modern lifestyle.

The large island features a streamlined Silestone benchtop with negative detailing. To provide a casual dining area, a heart rimu tabletop extends from the island. The tabletop has a liquid glass finish that gives it a super-gloss shine.

RH Cabinetmakers managing director Rob Hendrickx says functionality was addressed in several ways. As well as providing a scullery, the team built a computer centre into the main cabinetry.

"The desk and shelves are hidden behind bifolding pocket doors that can be slid back into the cabinetry when open. This ensures there are no doors blocking the circulation areas," he says. "We also provided Blum TandemBox soft-closing systems for all the drawers."
