Design-and-build company Cardinal Homes specialises in projects that require sound industry knowledge and an ability to think outside the square, says director Mark Darwen.

The project featured on these pages called for a large home to be built in an established area of Castor Bay with 180° coastal views, says Darwen.

"This home had to make the most of its crowning position on a seaside hilltop, but at the same time sit well with the surrounding architecture," says Darwen. "To maximise the spectacular views, we removed an existing pool and created a home that featured upstairs living areas.

"The exterior's painted brickwork and slurry mix produced a rustic effect that complements the traditional weatherboarding. These finishes worked in well with the look of neighbouring homes."

The home's interior is as carefully thought out as the exterior. Interior designer Donald Grant Sunderland created a practical, uncluttered environment that features everything from cutting edge kitchen appliances to under-floor heating.

To achieve such a home, it pays to approach a company that specialises in the non-standard build.

Cardinal Homes' directors have nearly 60 years' industry experience between them. This in-depth knowledge allows the company to get straight to the heart of a tricky design project , says director Grant Brown.

"The site for this project was so remote that foundation poles were set using a global positioning system," says Brown. "The complex build required careful technical consideration, including lowering diggers on to the site from the street above."

The end result was a private home that offered extensive water views from every room.

"Cardinal Homes addresses every aspect of a job closely," says Brown. "For example, this home features a state-of-the-art media room, complete with door and wall soundproofing. Cardinal Homes specialises in meeting a client's specific needs."
