A large property in the country calls out for a home built on an equivalent scale, and offers the opportunity to create close connections between living areas and the surrounding landscape.Design Construction Home has recently completed a new home on just such a site. The company, led by its two owners, Grant McIntyre and James Hicks, worked closely with the homeowners to build the 600m² home featured here.McIntyre says before his team was even able to begin building the house, they had to carry out major earthworks. Top 30 NZ New HOmes vertical logo "The land had to be sculpted to create a level building platform for the house and the planned outdoor spaces," he says.The solid masonry home has a strong and substantial appearance consistent with its proportions. Inside, the home's formal and informal living areas all flow smoothly out through bifolds and French doors onto large, sheltered outdoor terraces. An outdoor dining area with a barbecue is off the family living, dining and kitchen area, while the formal living and dining areas open up to a covered loggia. Beyond the terraces is a large pool, framed by rolling lawns and natural spring-fed ponds.Other living spaces include a home theatre and study, and the house also contains four main bedrooms and a separate guest suite. The complexity of the specialised plumbing and electrical requirements of the design posed the biggest challenge to the building team.
