Out of sight may very well be out of mind for the humble hydraulic system and partners, but like most behind-the-scenes applications, these systems are of paramount importance.

For the Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre, the filtration and regulation systems are probably the most essential to ensure the comfort and safety of patrons, says Robert Trisley, director of Trisley's Hydraulic Services.

"As well as the filtration system, for the Ian Thorpe Aquatic Centre the company installed automated chemical dosing and heating systems on all pools. Each pool was also fitted with ultraviolet generators.

"The biggest benefit of an ultraviolet system is as a secondary sanitiser, adding to water quality and clarity. During the filtration process pool water is passed over and exposed to UV-C rays, disinfecting the water and removing any odour," says Trisley.

A total of 11 Chadson sand filters were installed six for the main pool, three for the leisure pool and two for the program pool.

"The filters for the main pool have a capacity to filter 750m³ of water per hour the entire volume of the pool is filtered every three hours," says Trisley.
