Furniture that combines contemporary form with Eastern chic has become more popular in recent years. But homeowners are demanding high-quality pieces that will meet the demands of urban lifestyles.

Simon Maclean, director of Samarang Furniture, recognised this demand and three years ago founded locally based Samarang, to supply a collection of hand-crafted timber furniture that seamlessly blends this sought-after look with high quality materials and finishes.

"Samarang furniture is defined by its rich, rustic hues, solid construction principles and affordability," says Maclean."It can be best described as a simple take on the stately."

The range of water hyacinth, abaca and teak pieces includes lounge settings, dining chairs and coffee tables. This summer, Samarang adds to the extensive range by releasing a line of designer leather lounge suites. Maclean says this range also complements New Zealand native timber furniture.

Samarang contracts designers to create the collection in Samarang-owned factories in Java. The company takes an ethical trade approach, sourcing the highest quality timbers from sustainably milled plantations.
