Raising the standard

One of the most effective ways to improve skill levels and expand product knowledge is through regular contact with colleagues and associates.

For designers working in small businesses or on their own, this can be achieved by joining a professional body. Kitchen designer Royston Wilson says he decided to join the Kitchen & Bathroom Designers Institute of Australia (KBDI) to avoid becoming isolated from others in the industry.

"I believe it is important to have ongoing interaction with other like-minded people. This creates opportunities to keep up with the latest systems, products and technologies," says Wilson.

"Because the KBDI is aimed specifically at kitchen and bathroom designers, it is able to cater for the particular needs of our discipline."

The KBDI is open to all those involved in designing kitchens and bathrooms, with members ranging from students to highly experienced designers. It offers specialist training and continuing professional development through regular meetings and seminars. This allows designers to reach their full potential, says executive director Alex Milne.

Through its accreditation process, the institute also ensures its members maintain high standards of workmanship. Only those members who have met the KBDI's strict criteria are eligible to be known as Certified Kitchen Designers (CKD) or Certified Bathroom Designers (CBD).

Kitchen designer Markus Sawatzki says that belonging to the KBDI validates his professional status as a designer.

"In addition, the ongoing training and opportunities to interact with others in this field are very valuable," he says.
