Pure as snow
To enhance the crisp white palette of this remodelled kitchen, the benchtops are Corian in Glacier White
Minimalist kitchens are notable for their sleek, uncluttered look and for their purity of design. This renovated kitchen, designed by Shane George, is a prime example.
Situated in a prominent part of the family living area, the kitchen needed to be easy to keep clean and tidy, while still being highly functional. Consequently, George specified a bank of cabinetry with foldaway doors and a large scullery directly behind the main work area. The large appliances are integrated and small appliances, including the microwave oven, are hidden behind doors.
"To provide the required minimalist look, we used white finishes on every single surface," says George. "This includes the old timber floorboards, which are painted white."
The island features a Corian Glacier White benchtop that wraps down the sides. George says he specified Corian for a number of reasons, including aesthetics.
"Corian has a soft look a translucency that works with the cube-shaped acrylic hood above. It is also easy to work with. We were able to recess the cooktop, for example, and create a smooth, seamless benchtop that is in keeping with the rest of the kitchen."
George says Corian works well for the family being nonporous, it provides a hygienic surface for placing objects, is durable and easy to maintain.
Corian is distributed by The Laminex Group and is available in a wide range of colours and textures. As joins are inconspicuous, it is well suited to long benchtop spans. It is also resistant to heat and staining, and comes with an extensive warranty.
