Architectural features are all the more arresting when they stand out from their surroundings. And one of the best ways to achieve such a look is through the color selection.

This new house, designed by architect Jim McCalligan, features a spacious great room with rich cherry wood flooring, and a pitched Western red cedar wood ceiling. In between, white-painted walls and bulkheads frame the kitchen, and surround a double-height void above the entrance. Cut-outs within the walls around the void reinforce the architectural feel of the space.

McCalligan says the off-white walls, which were painted in Kelly-Moore Sea of Sand, are more clearly defined by the soft gold color of the background walls. These walls feature Kelly-Moore Great Gaucho.

"The contrasting color punctuates the room, enhancing the sculptural elements. It also influences the way the space is perceived," he says.

To provide another, more subtle contrast, McCalligan used a gloss paint for the door jambs, baseboards and trim. Although a harmonious shade between the white and gold was specified, the textural difference between the gloss and matte finishes helps to enliven the space visually.

McCalligan says he frequently chooses Kelly-Moore paints for his projects.

"I can always find the right shades, and the staff are helpful and accommodating when I need a particular sample or fandeck," he says. "I also appreciate the graduated chroma color chips that make it easy to find complementary shades and accent colors."
